Medical Training Initiatives
Special scheme for medical professionals.
The Medical Training Initiatives scheme, or MTI, introduced in 2006, is a special category of TWES permit, and many of the same rules apply. It is intended to allow all medical professionals, doctors and dentists a period of up to 2 years training in the UK, usually working within the NHS. This scheme replaced arrangements that ended in March 2006, under which doctors and dentists were able to qualify to stay on for regular employment here.
Under the new MTI scheme an applicant is expected to leave the UK for a period of work in their home country before they might qualify to return for work permit employment here.
The scheme arrangements contain requirements concerning both the trainee and the job to be offered. Lawrence Lupin solicitors can advise you on both aspects, and can assist you in making applications to employ a medical trainee. Unlike other TWES permits, there is no need for the work offered to be additional to your usual staffing complement. You can apply to employ medical students or trainees who are already in the UK, and they will not need to leave the UK to apply for a visa.
Trainee doctors and dentists are allowed to be accompanied by their spouses and any minor children, who will be allowed to take employment.
